Arecanut/Betel nut/Supari Botanically known as Areca catechu from Arecaceae family.  It is available in dried, cured, and fresh forms. The effect of chewing betel leaf and areca nut together is relatively mild and could be compared to that of drinking a cup of coffee. It is Considered an auspicious ingredient in Hinduism. It is an ornamental as well as an economically important plant.

Special Character of this variety 

  • This Mohitnagar variety is one of the high-yielding varieties of Arecanut and it is mostly cultivated in West Bengal, but it can grow in all Coconut & Arecanut growing regions.
  • The plant starts fruiting after reaching 2-meter height, which is almost 1.5-2 years after planting. Medium-thick stem, partially drooping crown, orange-yellow colored oval to round shaped nuts.
  • Higher level of uniformity in fruiting and size. The bunches are well placed and nuts loosely arranged on spikes which help in uniform development.
  • The average dry kernel yield is 3.67 kg/plant/year.

INITIAL CARE FOR 10-15 DAYS JUST AFTER RECEIVING YOUR PLANT 

  1. Remove the Packaging Materials carefully.
  2. Press the soil in the pot & add additional soil(garden mix) if necessary.
  3. Maintain moisture in the pot, Do not overwater it may kill your plant, so make sure that the soil should be dry between watering.
  4. Make sure that plants get enough morning direct bright light(2-3hrs) for 10-15 days & do not go for immediate transplanting (minimum 1 month)
  5. After 1 month you can transplant it into a slightly bigger pot than the present pot or directly in the ground.
  6. Just prune if any branch of the plant is get damaged in transits. New leaves will come definitely.

Planting And Care

Sunlight

  • Sunlight of more than 6 hours a day is ideal for flowering and fruit development of the plant.

Soil

  • The soil should be well drained, fertile and rich in organic content.

Watering

  • Poke your finger/plain small stick into the soil to check the moisture.
  • Apply 4 cup(approx. 200 ml) of water when the top soil (1-2 inch) in the pot feels dry to touch.
  • Do not overwater the plant.
  • As a rule of thumb, water the plants thoroughly in summer and reduce watering in winter and rainy season.
  • Water should be applied preferably in the morning or evening.

Application of Fertilizer

  • Before application of fertilizer loosen the topsoil without disturbing the roots of the plant so, it can uptake the nutrients and moisture easily.
  • Apply organic fertilizer once a month during the main growing season (December-February)
  • Apply water immediately after application of fertilizer.

Re-potting

  • When a plant outgrows in current pot, re-pot with fresh potting soil and some fertilizer.
  • Do the re-potting late evening and keep the plant in shady area for 2 to 3 days and then move the plant in its suitable climatic condition.

Plant Protection

  • Remove dead, infected or damaged plant parts and discard them away from the plants.
  • For any insect attack or disease, you can use Neem oil, Eucalyptus oil or Citrus oil spray for primary treatment.
